Hi, I'm Shannon and I have been in the beauty industry for over 20 years and have extensive knowledge through experience in the art of permanent makeup for over 10 years, as an artist and trainer. Due to the recent shift in the last few years in the PMU industry, I want to clarify my opinions and advice for persons exploring the options for PMU.
Look into the artist that you trust to perform the procedure. Ask for a detailed consultation and for photos of HEALED images of the artist's previous work. PMU looks different immediately after the procedure to when it heals so seeing healed photos is very crucial. During a consultation, the artist should ask what you desire, educate you on what they think will enhance your features the best, understand and agree with the desired result that you have in mind, and inform you of your expected maintenance and how the tattoo shall fade or be adjusted in the future due to natural aging effects on the skin.
It is my opinion that permanent makeup is supposed to enhance your natural features and not be confused with an absolute replacement for an "overly made-up" look. As we
age, our faces change, maybe even sag a little, and with a natural application, these changes are easy to adjust to in the future. Certain rules should be followed while designing the shape and color for any PMU application to avoid the need for removal or difficult changes in future touch-up or color-boosting appointments.
Once you choose the best artist that aligns with you, trust the process and look forward to the end healed result. The main point for healed results will be to follow the aftercare provided by your particular artist. The artist will know what the best aftercare is for the specific products and applications they use, considering also an assessment of your specific skin type.
I personally believe that the recent influx of undereducated artists is producing PMU results that appear unnatural, causing people to hesitate in exploring PMU. In my opinion, PMU should be indistinguishable from natural makeup unless you choose to disclose it. The results should be subtle and natural, accentuating your best facial features. I hope this information is helpful for anyone considering the convenience and confidence that PMU offers. Best of luck in your PMU journey!
